Public sympathy will weigh in ECL’s favour, Msoni warns govt over benefits threats

Africa-Press – Zambia. We think that pursuing former president Edgar Lungu on the question of his state benefits is a total needless and fruitless political pursuit, All peoples Congress (APC) president Nasson Msoni has said.

Msoni said public sympathy will weigh in favour of the former Head of State and ultimately the damage on the credibility of government will be huge. He said in a statement issued to the media that a formal letter should be written to Lungu and ask him to exculpate himself for any alleged breaches

“In a nutshell it is more likely to be a distraction on the part of government. Undoubtedly public sympathy will weigh in favour of the former head of state and ultimately the damage on the credibility of government will be huge,” he said.

“The dominant question is have we written to the former President over this matter? or are we acting on the basis of his recent media statement? We think that rules of national Justice demand that a formal letter be written to him and ask him to exculpate himself for any alleged breaches.”

Msoni said Lungu is entitled to the same measure of rights and fundamental freedoms beyond the mere receipt of his government benefits. “We must now encourage maximum restraint and tolerance in the manner and style we handle matters pertaining to the former President. In the circumstances cool heads is the way forward,” he said.
