
Africa-Press – Zambia. POLICE in Lusaka have arrested and detained political leaders and civil society organisation leaders who were protesting against Government’s decision to give the tender to a foreign Micro Ocean Consortium to construct the road being financed by NAPSA.
Among those picked is leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (leader) Kasonde Mweenda and Saboi Imboela of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Police in riot gear rounded up opposition leader EFF leader Kasonde Mwenda who led a group of protesters at Lusaka Civic Centre.
The group carried placards denouncing the Lusaka-Ndola dual carriage way. Police whisked away protestors in two police armoured vehicles, under heavy security.
It is not yet known the offence those arrested will be slapped with, but some senior officers at the scene were heard saying those arrested will only see their day out of the cells next week after they are charged.
Others who were bundled in the police amoured vehicles are Jackson Silawve, leader of the Golden Party of Zambia and New Heritage Party president Chishala Kateka.
Police officers also threatened to pick journalists who were covering the protestors saying, the media was fueling tension in the country and those who will post anything on the protest will be picked and charged for inciting Zambians to rise against an elected government.
