MATTER OF DREALOCKED PUPIL IN HIGH COURT….FATHER WANTS SON BACK IN CLASS WITHOUT CONDITIONS

Africa-Press – Zambia. The father of a dreadlocked boy who was barred from attending class at Kasama Boys Secondary School has asked the High Court to order the State to allow his son back in class without any conditions.

Nathan Mubanga is also seeking an order of injunction restraining the State and its agents from interfering with the 13-year-old’s attendance of classes on the basis of his refusal to cut his dreadlocks.

Mr Mubanga, of Amin village, Kasama, contends that the school’s insistence that his son cuts his dreadlocks for him to attend class is contrary to the dictates of the child’s religion.

He is also seeking a declaration that the State’s continued insistence that the pupil must cut his locks is a violation of his right to freedom of conscience and religion.
