IDJ Promotes Training for Basketball School Monitors

Africa-Press – Zambia. The Institute of Sport and Youth (IDJ) launched a training program on Thursday in Praia for 25 young people, aiming to equip them as instructors to promote organized sports and foster social inclusion.

The training, which runs until Sunday the 22nd at the Vavá Duarte Sports Gymnasium, focuses on young people from peripheral areas of the Sotavento region, seeking to equip them with the tools to act as agents of change in their communities through sport.

In statements to Inforpress, the IDJ’s Youth Administrator, Sandra Borges, explained that this initiative arises within the framework of a protocol with the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), in Portugal.

The main focus is to address the shortage of qualified instructors for basketball training schools in the country.

“Sport is the engine for development. When we have young people practicing, we have fewer young people engaging in risky behaviors. This training will impact and change young people within the communities,” argued the administrator, emphasizing that the trainees were nominated by the community associations themselves to serve as “replicators” of knowledge.

Sandra Borges further stated that, after this stage in Praia, the IDJ plans to take the same training to the islands of Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, Sal, and Boa Vista, ensuring national coverage of the project.

The trainer and coach Nuno Leite, responsible for teaching the course, explained that the program aims to create a solid foundation so that future instructors can plan and structure training professionally.

Nuno Leite highlighted the existing potential in basketball in Cape Verde, considering that the purpose is to consolidate existing knowledge and improve the quality of the instructors’ intervention in the sports training process.
