Africa-Press – Zambia. <\/strong><\/span>The Patriotic Front has urged the Zambia Army Command to discipline its soldiers seen in a video that has widely been shared on social media torturing young people who are alleged to have issued disparaging remarks against the Head of State.<\/p>\n

Party Chairperson Legal Affairs George Chisanga says the Army command should take interest in the matter because their responsibility is to defend the nation against foreign aggression and not to police ordinary crimes which is the mandate of regular police officers.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a media briefing today, Mr. Chisanga expressed worry that when the Army begins to take interest in arresting citizens, it is a complete departure from the rule of law.<\/p>\n

He said that although the PF does not tolerate insults on the President, it is not the responsibility of the defense forces to handle such kind of affairs and those that offend the law should be dealt with in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n

And Action Aid Zambia Country Director Nalucha Ziba said her Organization is appalled by the actions of law enforcement agencies torturing the young person which is a violation of article 15 of the Constitution which prohibits any forms of torture and inhumane degrading treatment.<\/p>\n

She said that the perpetrators of the torture acted illegally by assuming the roles of investigator, prosecutor, judge and executioner contrary to article 18 of the Zambian Constitution.<\/p>\n
