Africa-Press – Zambia. <\/strong><\/span>Joseph Chewe has been re-elected Mine workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) President, after going through unopposed during the elections held last evening, in Livingstone. Chewe will be deputised by Alick Phiri, who beat two other contestants to land the position of Deputy President of the union.<\/p>\n

Other MUZ executive members who went through unopposed are; George Mumba as General Secretary, John Silungwe as Deputy General Secretary, Chalwe Lengwe and Erick Kazembe as Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer, respectively.<\/p>\n

Labour Commissioner, Givens Muntengwa, announced and declared the winners at the close of the 15th MUZ quadrennial conference in Livingstone. He advised those who lost the elections against leaving the union to form splinter unions.<\/p>\n

Muntengwa said the proliferation of unions will weaken the labour movement. And Chewe, who has won his, second -four year term, has demanded for hard work from his team to improve the conditions of miners in the country. Meanwhile, Zambia Congress of Trade Unions -ZCTU- Deputy Secretary General, Joy Beene, praised government for not interfering in the MUZ Elections.<\/p>\n
