Africa-Press – Zambia. <\/strong><\/span>The Zambian Ministry of Community Development and Social Services has announced that the process of repealing and replacing the NGO Act number 16 of 2009 will be completed soon. Minister in Charge, Doreen Mwamba, has expressed confidence that the bill will be enacted into law due to the work that has already been put in place.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have made significant progress in the process of repealing and replacing the NGO Act number 16 of 2009. The new law will create a road map for registering all NGOs and establish a firm legal framework that will regulate the sector,\u201d said Minister Mwamba.<\/p>\n

Once the new bill is enacted, it will provide a more conducive environment for the growth and development of NGOs in Zambia. Minister Mwamba has urged all NGOs to fully participate in the process and acquire knowledge in the terrorist financing outreach and awareness meetings scheduled to take place throughout the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to work together to ensure that the NGO sector in Zambia is well regulated and that it operates within the confines of the law. We are undertaking a comprehensive NGO terrorist financing risk assessment to protect the sector,\u201d added Minister Mwamba.<\/p>\n

During the World NGO day celebrations themed \u201cCelebrating Non-governmental Organization localised as celebrating the works of Non-governmental Organizations in Zambia,\u201d Minister Mwamba appreciated the work of NGOs and stressed the importance of enacting the new bill into law.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe commemoration is an opportunity for the government to appreciate the work of NGOs. The new law will provide a legal framework that is better suited to the needs of NGOs in Zambia, ultimately promoting democracy and the protection of human rights,\u201d said Minister Mwamba.<\/p>\n

Guess Nyirenda, Executive Director of Operation Young Vote, has commended the government for showing political will to sustain the commemorations. However, he has stressed the need to expedite the process of enacting the NGO bill.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is encouraging to see the government showing political will to sustain the commemorations. However, we need to expedite the process of enacting the NGO bill to ensure that the NGO sector is well regulated and that it operates within the confines of the law,\u201d said Mr. Nyirenda.<\/p>\n

Tamara Phiri, Vice Chairperson of NGOs in Zambia, has emphasized the critical role that NGOs play in protecting human rights and strengthening democracy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NGO sector plays a critical role in protecting human rights and strengthening democracy. We welcome the government\u2019s efforts to create a legal framework that is better suited to the needs of NGOs in Zambia,\u201d said Ms. Phiri.<\/p>\n

The enactment of the new NGO bill will create a legal framework that is better suited to the needs of NGOs in Zambia. It is expected that the new law will provide a more conducive environment for the growth and development of NGOs in the country, and ultimately, the promotion of democracy and the protection of human rights.<\/p>\n
