Africa-Press – Zambia. <\/strong><\/span>The National Anthems of Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are based on a Christian hymn entitled \u201cNkosi Sikelel\u2019 iAfrika\u201d (or \u201cLord Bless Africa\u201d) composed in 1897 by Enoch Sontonga, a Xhosa clergyman, at a Methodist mission school near Johannesburg in South Africa.<\/p>\n

The purpose of this article is to suggest a few minor changes to the National Anthem of the Republic of Zambia, which became the country\u2019s official Anthem upon the passage of the National Anthem Act by the National Assembly in September 1973.<\/p>\n

The following are the lyrics of the current National Anthem of the Republic of Zambia: \u201cStand and sing of Zambia, proud and free, Land of work and joy in unity,<\/p>\n

Victors in the struggle for the right, We\u2019ve won freedom\u2019s fight. All one, strong and free. Africa is our own motherland, Fashion\u2019d with and blessed by God\u2019s good hand,<\/p>\n

Let us all her people join as one, Brothers under the sun. All one, strong and free. One land and one nation is our cry, Dignity and peace \u2018neath Zambia\u2019s sky,<\/p>\n

Like our noble eagle in its flight, Zambia, praise to thee. All one, strong and free. Chorus: Praise be to God, Praise be, praise be, praise be, Bless our great nation, Zambia, Zambia, Zambia. Free men we stand Under the flag of our land. Zambia, praise to thee! All one, strong and free.\u201d<\/p>\n

Firstly, we need to change \u201cfor the right\u201d in Part I of the Anthem to \u201cfor our rights.\u201d Secondly, we need to add the following soon after the \u201cBrothers under the sun\u201d line in Part II: \u201cSi\u2019ters under the sun,\u201d where \u201cSi\u2019ters\u201d would represent \u201cSisters.\u201d Thirdly, we need to change the \u201cis our cry\u201d in the first line of Part III to \u201care our cry.\u201d<\/p>\n

And fourthly, we need to change the \u201cFree men we stand\u201d in the chorus to \u201cFree \u2018zens we stand,\u201d where \u201c\u2018zens\u201d would represent \u201ccitizens.\u201d We need to seriously consider the prospect of making the foregoing minor changes to our beloved country\u2019s National Anthem mainly to make it more gender-neutral. The new era National Anthem for the Republic of Zambia would, therefore, be read or sang as follows:<\/p>\n

Land of work and joy in unity, Victors in the struggle for our rights, We\u2019ve won freedom\u2019s fight. All one, strong and free. Africa is our own motherland,<\/p>\n

Fashion\u2019d with and blessed by God\u2019s good hand, Let us all her people join as one, Brothers under the sun, Si\u2019ters under the sun, All one, strong and free.<\/p>\n

One land and one nation are our cry, Dignity and peace \u2018neath Zambia\u2019s sky, Like our noble eagle in its flight, Zambia, praise to thee. All one, strong and free.<\/p>\n

In 2005, according to Wikipedia, women\u2019s groups in the country fruitlessly petitioned for a number of the lyrics in \u201cStand and Sing of Zambia, Proud and Free\u201d to be changed, because they felt that some of the lyrics were too male-orientated. And in 2012, Prof. Michelo Hansungule echoed the women\u2019s concerns that the country\u2019s Anthem was too masculine, and also argued that it might have intellectual property implications because it had the same tune as the National Anthem of the Republic of South Africa.<\/p>\n
