{"id":76026,"date":"2025-09-01T18:53:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T18:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zambia\/all-news\/hospice-nurse-reflects-on-profound-death-experiences"},"modified":"2025-09-01T18:56:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T18:56:20","slug":"hospice-nurse-reflects-on-profound-death-experiences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zambia\/all-news\/hospice-nurse-reflects-on-profound-death-experiences","title":{"rendered":"Hospice Nurse Reflects on Profound Death Experiences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Zambia. <\/strong><\/span>A hospice nurse has shared a \u2018wild\u2019 experience she had that was so unusual she struggles to put it into words.<\/p>\n<p>Julie McFadden, better known online as Hospice Nurse Julie, has worked as an end-of-life carer for nearly a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Julie is known for sharing her first-hand accounts of people\u2019s dying process, having held the hands of hundreds of patients over the years.<\/p>\n<p>She even has her own book, titled Nothing to Fear: Demystifying Death to Live More Fully, which hit shelves last year.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Julie has discussed three things that are often part of the dying process; one being that the patient can still hear people in their final moments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been studies done on people who were dying which showed the hearing sensor in the brain was the last bit to shut down,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don\u2019t argue, or don\u2019t talk about them like they aren\u2019t there because we do believe they can hear you,\u201d she went on to urge, adding: \u201cAs a hospice nurse, I always try to speak to the people who are unconscious like they could answer me back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Julie has recalled one particular experience she had when someone she was caring for was nearing the end of their life.<\/p>\n<p>In her book, she recounted looking after a man named Randy whom she\u2019d \u2018really got to know\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a younger man who didn\u2019t have many friends or family, because in his life, he pushed people away,\u201d she wrote about Randy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a lot of mental health issues, a lot of anxiety, and was a hoarder. When we came into his house \u2014 which was unsafe and unliveable \u2014 he was desperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julie managed to get in touch with some distant cousins of Randy\u2019s, and between them, they arranged for him to be at home so that she could care for him.<\/p>\n<p>She said that after this happened, he was \u2018like a different person\u2019 and he knew there were people there to look after him.<\/p>\n<p>Julie was Randy\u2019s nurse for nine months up until his death. With her experience in mind, she knew on the day that he died that it would be the last time she saw him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was unconscious, barely breathing, and looked very comfortable,\u201d Julie recalled. Seeing this, she said her final goodbyes and left to drive home.<\/p>\n<p>It was when she got in the car that she had a very unique experience.<\/p>\n<p>Wishing farewell to Randy once more in her head, she began to hear him talking back to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn that moment, I heard his voice in my head. It hit every sense: I could hear his voice, I could feel how he was feeling, and I could see him in my mind\u2019s eye,\u201d Julie said. \u201c[He said] \u2018Oh my gosh, Julie, if only I had known how good this was going to be, I wouldn\u2019t have been so afraid.\u2019 It felt like he was smiling and soaring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julie admitted that it was hard to articulate exactly how it felt, but was sure it was \u2018something beyond anything she could ever describe\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>She went on to recount: \u201cI was so emotional in the moment that I was weeping tears of joy in my car.
