Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. BINGA, Apr.28 (NewsDayLive) – Seven people were injured after a commuter omnibus they were travelling in developed a mechanical fault and rolled backwards on a slope near Chilila in Binga on Saturday night.
The vehicle miraculously stopped after hitting a bucket of fish, narrowly avoiding a plunge into a deep gorge but by then some of the passengers had already been thrown out.
The injured were rushed to Binga District Hospital, where they are receiving medical attention.
Speaking from her hospital bed, one of the victims said she broke her shoulder after being thrown out when the door opened while vehicle was rolling backwards.
“I was sitting near the passenger door of the commuter omnibus when it started rolling backwards. I fell out of the vehicle and landed on the ground, and that’s when I felt a sharp pain on my shoulder. I’m grateful that I’m alive, but I’m in deep pain,” said the patient who declined to be named.
Binga North Member of Parliament, Chineka Muchimba confirmed the accident.
“We had earlier engaged Kamativi Mine to assist in patching the road, which has become a death trap due to its poor state. Works are expected to start soon, and we urge road users to exercise caution while travelling on this road,” said Muchimba.
The area where the accident occurred has become a blackspot after claiming 10 lives under similar circumstances in 2006.
