Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Gerald Mlotshwa, chairman of the Sports and Recreation Commission, has welcomed the restoration of bilateral relations between Zimbabwe Cricket and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Currently in the UK to watch the one-off Test match between England and Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, Mlotshwa praised the ECB for its efforts to normalize relations between the two nations.
The match, which began on Thursday, marks the first between the two countries in 22 years. Mlotshwa highlighted the significance of this development, noting that it reflects a broader effort to improve relations between Zimbabwe and the UK.
“Zimbabwe’s reengagement with the UK is also evident in sports. The ECB’s support for this tour demonstrates England’s willingness to put the past behind and move forward towards normalizing its relationship with Zimbabwe.
While this is a small step, it’s a significant one on many levels,” he said.
Notably, the ECB has committed to assisting smaller Test-playing nations with their development. As part of this agreement, Zimbabwe will receive a share of the financial benefits, marking the first time a touring nation has received financial rewards.
