Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. A WOMEN’S rights group has bemoaned the low representation of women in key decision-making positions and business disputes, despite being the majority in the country.

Women’s Academy for Leadership and Political Excellence (Walpe) deputy director, Jessy Chihota, said they were doing a number of interventions, including holding capacity-building training workshops to ensure more women are catapulted to leadership positions.

“Women make up the majority of Zimbabwe’s population, yet when it comes to leadership positions, women are severely underrepresented,” Chihota said.

“As a result, we decided that we need to start promoting women’s leadership so that women can be equally represented and so that gendered decisions at the local and national levels can be made in the interest of women so that women are not on the losing end when it comes to whatever they can benefit from as citizens in the country.”

She said this after Walpe conducted a capacity-building workshop which was attended by 65 women in the capital.

Statistics indicate that women make up about 52% of the total population, the difference being men.

“We decided that we identify women who have leadership capacity and then we take them through our training, like this one, where we teach them skills that they can use to make money that could potentially fund their political campaigns and also just to boost their livelihoods,” Chihota said.
