Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. THE Harare Athletics Board (HAB) is set to host a crucial preparatory relay competition this Saturday at the University of Zimbabwe grounds.
According to HAB chairperson Cousinet Simunyu, the event anticipates a significant turnout and aims to prepare athletes for upcoming major competitions.
“We have 23 registered clubs, but we also accommodate individual athletes and those without a club,” Simunyu said.
“Athletes from schools, companies, community teams, tertiary institutions, and even the uniformed forces — we accommodate everyone.”
This relay competition is more than just a local event; it serves as a vital training ground.
Despite being a seemingly small scale event, many athletes destined for international platforms are expected to participate, using it as a platform to hone their skills.
When asked about the significance of these games, Simunyu highlighted their preparatory role for various levels of competition.
“Yes, we have teams from primary and secondary schools who are preparing for their Cosafa games in August. We also have the senior championships games happening on July 26 and 27,” she said.
Furthermore, members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces will participate, using the event to get ready for their regional games.
“We also have some uniformed forces who are travelling for their uniformed forces regional games from Sadc. So they are also preparing their teams for competition,” Simunyu explained.
She noted that some tertiary institutions were building their teams for the 2026 sporting season.
HAB plays a vital role within the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe, boasting national team representatives such as Isiah Mupfayi, Ngoni Makusha, Brenda Njodzi and Maryjoy Mudyiravanji, among others, who hail from Harare.
Simunyu expressed strong confidence in the value that HAB members will continue to bring to the national team.
