Injury puts IBF champion Sibanda’s title defence on hold

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. INTERNATIONAL Boxing Federation minimum weight champion Beaven Sibanda has been forced to postpone his upcoming title defence against WBC mini-flyweight champion Joey Canoy due to a serious Achilles tendon injury.

The fight was scheduled for October 4, 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The injury, which occurred during a recent training session, has left the young boxer sidelined.

He will require surgery and extensive rehabilitation before he can return to the ring.

In an exclusive interview with NewsDay Sport, Sibanda explained what happened.

“My calves were a bit tight,” he said, “but I just kept on pushing because it was sparring, you know, sparring where you’re like in a fight. I was moving around, and then in round eight, I just heard a loud snap in my left leg.”

The champion was taken to a clinic, where doctors confirmed a complete tear in his Achilles tendon.

“I’ll be going for the operation on Tuesday,” Sibanda shared.

“There’s currently a fundraiser happening for me to sustain myself during the operation and after, because I will not be fighting for some time.”

Beyond the physical pain, Sibanda said the psychological toll is immense.

“Can’t explain the pain I’m feeling, not the physical part, but the thought of no longer performing in my next scheduled tournament on the 4th,” he said.

Despite the setback, Sibanda remains optimistic.

“It’s a tough thing to let you know when your career goes on pause,” he acknowledged, “and I know my ratings will be affected, but I just take it on my chin and face reality, soldier on, and I know God has a plan for me.”

A fundraising campaign has been launched by South African boxing Hall of Famer Brian Mitchell to help Sibanda with his medical and living expenses.

Mitchell confirmed that since Sibanda lacks medical aid, the funds are necessary to cover surgery, rehabilitation, rent and other monthly living expenses.

While it’s uncertain when Sibanda will be able to return to the ring, the champion has a clear promise for his fans: no matter how long it takes, he will come back stronger and tougher than ever.
