Mawarire Warns of Risks After ZANU PF Reshuffle

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Political activist Mbizvo Jealousy Mawarire has warned that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s recent reshuffle of the ZANU PF Politburo could trigger unintended consequences.

On Tuesday, ZANU PF announced Mnangagwa’s decision to remove Secretary General Obert Mpofu from his position, reassigning him to the less influential role of Secretary for ICT.

Mpofu had reportedly opposed the move by Harare Province to co-opt controversial businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, a close ally of Mnangagwa, into the party’s Central Committee.

In other changes, Patrick Chinamasa, who has been campaigning for Mnangagwa to extend his tenure beyond the constitutionally mandated two terms and for Tagwirei’s cooptation, was replaced by Ziyambi Ziyambi as Secretary for Legal Affairs and appointed Treasurer General.

Meanwhile, Jacob Mudenda, a prominent Mnangagwa ally and former Treasurer General, took over Mpofu’s previous role.

Speaking to South African broadcaster eNCA on Wednesday about the reshuffle, Mawarire did not rule out the possibility of a coup, saying: “Anything is possible.” He said:

“There is a possibility of escalating political turmoil, of further collapse of the economy and once it collapses and there is discohesion in the ruling party, anything is possible.”
