Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. ZIMBABWE has officially launched the Africa Broadband Map initiative in Victoria Falls today, with government officials and partners saying the programme will be central to bridging the digital divide, attracting investment, and advancing the country’s digital transformation agenda.
ICT, Postal and Courier Services deputy minister Dingumuzi Phuti said the initiative presented a chance to unify fragmented networks across the nation.
“By aligning our efforts, we can enhance customer and business outcomes, accelerate the fulfilment of our citizens’ needs, and support comprehensive government approaches to digital transformation,” he said.
Phuti also revealed that Zimbabwe had completed work on a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy.
“The Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe has finalised the National AI Strategy document, and we are now awaiting its electronic release,” he said.
He explained that the strategy was designed to make digital transformation more accessible and affordable.
“It emphasises the critical need to integrate advanced technologies, foster innovation and ensure that all citizens can benefit from the opportunities offered by a digitally connected society,” Phuti added.
Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe director-general Gift Machengete said Zimbabwe’s selection as one of the 11 countries benefiting from the Africa Broadband Map was a sign of growing investor confidence.
“This programme underscores Zimbabwe’s ability to attract international investment in broadband connectivity,” he said.
“It will be a lifeline for education, a lifeline for healthcare, and a lifeline for economic growth.
“Accurate broadband maps will enable us to plan properly, allocate resources fairly, ensure transparency, and avoid duplication of efforts.”
The launch of the Africa Broadband Map in Zimbabwe marks a significant step toward closing connectivity gaps, with government, regulators and international partners agreeing that stronger digital infrastructure is vital for inclusive growth, innovation and competitiveness in the years ahead.
