Global health summit set for Harare

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. HEALTH experts, policymakers and global advocates will gather in Harare this November for a critical conference aimed at combating the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The two-day event, Act Now! Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future, will be held at the Harare International Conference Centre on November 19 and 20.

The event will coincide with the World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week, a global campaign co-ordinated by leading international health bodies.

It is organised by the Health and Child Care ministry in partnership with international agencies and local stakeholders.

Experts warn that drug-resistant infections are an escalating crisis for human, animal and environmental health worldwide.

In a statement, the Health ministry emphasised the need for a unified front.

“The fight against antimicrobial resistance requires a united, multisectoral approach,” it said.

“This conference will serve as a platform to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders.”

Scientists, veterinarians, pharmacists and public health practitioners will converge to share strategies and innovations for curbing resistance.

The agenda features presentations from World Health Organisation (WHO) representatives on global AMR trends and best practices for antimicrobial stewardship.

Panel discussions will tackle key issues such as antibiotic use in agriculture, hospital infection control and public awareness campaigns.

Health officials stress that the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in humans and animals have accelerated the rise of resistant superbugs, making common infections increasingly difficult and sometimes impossible to treat.

“We must act now to secure the effectiveness of life-saving medicines for future generations,” said a member of the conference organising committee.

“Every prescription, every treatment and every decision counts in protecting our collective health.”

World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week is commemorated annually from November 18 to 24.
