Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Government says it has acquired Monomotapa Hotel from local hospitality group, African Sun, for use by Members of Parliament during sittings.
This was revealed by Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion minister Mthuli Ncube at the ongoing pre-budget seminar in Bulawayo.
“I’m going to announce today that we have bought you [MPs] a hotel, the Monomotapa Hotel. This is for use by MPs,” he said.
Ncube said the move was designed to cut down on hotel booking expenses and ensure significant savings on public funds whenever Parliament is in session.
The hotel would be open to the public when Parliament is not in session, he said.
In July this year, African Sun said it had put the hotel, a landmark Harare property, on the market as part of its ongoing efforts to unlock shareholder value.
The property was valued at US$18 million.
Ncube did not disclose any financial details of the government’s purchase.
