Chikomba council chair threatens NewsDay journalist

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. CHIKOMBA Rural District Council chairperson Israel Dhikinya has attacked NewsDay journalist Miriam Mangwaya for writing an article saying the local authority could lose more than US$250 000 in compensation claims from employees fired over an alleged US$2,50 fraud.

NewsDay reported that the local authority spent thousands of dollars pursuing a legal battle that spilled to the Supreme Court. The council lost the case.

The workers, who were fired over the US$2,50 are claiming a total of US$255 000, a development which has triggered anger among ratepayers and councillors.

Local Government minister Garwe wrote to Dhikinya, directing the local authority to settle the claims.

In the circulating audio, Dhikinya, who was addressing Zanu PF Chikomba councillors, said: “Good evening to you all honourable councillors. We are not happy with this article. But there are so many errors in this article. I want to tell you that the journalist who wrote this article is an opposition member. The letter from the boss [Garwe] found its way into the hands of the opposition. We are working on it 24/7. I will keep you updated. Right now, I am trying to book an appointment with minister Garwe to set the record straight with him.”
