Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. GOVERNMENT has reaffirmed its commitment to re-establish Bulawayo as a modern, competitive and future-ready industrial city.
This was revealed by Industry and Commerce minister Nqobizitha Mangaliso Ndhlovu during the 32nd annual conference of the Business Council for Sustainable Development of Zimbabwe, convened under the theme Industry 5.0: A Tool for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development.
He said Bulawayo was once the heartbeat of manufacturing, engineering, textiles, heavy industry and railway infrastructure.
“It powered our national economy, shaped innovation and sustained generations of workers,” he said.
“Today, we stand at a moment to reclaim Bulawayo’s industrial legacy, re-establish it as a centre of innovation, manufacturing excellence, and sustainable development.”
He added:“(We are looking at ways) to re-establish Bulawayo as a modern, competitive and future-ready industrial city, one that honours its historic industrial legacy while fully embracing the opportunities and demands of Industry 5.0.”
Ndhlovu highlighted that the 2025 national budget presentation statement outlined a resource-allocation framework designed to drive private-sector expansion, enhance industrial competitiveness.
“(It seeks to) support retooling initiatives, strengthen infrastructure development and bolster energy security—critical foundations for the realisation of Industry 5.0.
“Together, these developments underscore the government’s unwavering commitment to fast-tracking economic transformation and fostering an environment in which our industries can innovate, expand, broaden their production-possibility frontiers and achieve optimal efficiencies.”
He stated that they would ensure that industrialisation trajectory remains evidence-driven, future-ready and closely aligned with global sustainability imperatives.
Bulawayo mayor David Coltart, who was represented by councillorMxolisi Mahlangu, said the City of Bulawayo had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare ministry and the Business Council for Sustainable Development Zimbabwe.
“The MoU is ushering in a new era of collaboration and innovation and is a solid commitment to working together, aligning our respective efforts and resources to tackle sustainability challenges head-on,”Coltart said.
“We are united in our mission to promote sustainable business practices and, together, we can make significant strides in climate change adaptation, energy management and waste reduction among other issues.”
