Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. THE Meteorological Services Department (MSD) and the Department of Civil Protection have issued a joint severe weather alert, warning of intense thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and potential flooding across multiple provinces from yesterday through to tomorrow.
The alert highlights a significant risk for Manicaland, Masvingo, Harare Metropolitan and parts of Mashonaland East and Central.
These areas could see rainfall exceeding 50mm within
24 hours, accompanied by damaging lightning, strong winds and hail.
According to a report released on Tuesday, the severe weather conditions are being driven by a cold, moist air moving from south-eastern South Africa, which will interact with existing moisture over Zimbabwe.
This combination is expected to trigger widespread storms, with the eastern provinces facing the highest impact.
“These conditions pose serious risks including flash floods, hazardous road conditions with reduced visibility, landslides and rockfalls,” the alert read.
They urged the public to take immediate precautionary measures as directed by local Civil Protection Units.
Communities, particularly in flood-prone areas, river basins and wetlands, are advised to be vigilant.
The public warning specifically mentions risks from “strong winds, fallen trees, blown-off rooftops, lightning and hail”.
The alert comes as southern Africa, including Zimbabwe, anticipates normal to above-normal rainfall for the 2025-26 season, raising the overall flood risk, especially along major rivers and in cyclone-prone zones.
