Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. MASHONALAND Central’s young talent, Malcom Gonoremvuu, is looking to extend his winning streak at the Liquor Hub Marathon scheduled for tomorrow in Bulawayo.
Gono, as he is popularly known by his fans, has assured athletics enthusiasts that he is in top form to defend his status, having won the Under-14 5km race at the NetOne-sponsored Albun Honde Valley Marathon.
In an interview with NewsDay Sport, Malcom’s father, Archford Gonoremvuu, said the Liquor Hub showdown presents an opportunity to place Malcom on the national athletics map.
“Malcom is running his last race of the year, and I hope he will win as usual,” he said.
“This will elevate him to a top-class runner at the age of 11.”
Despite disruptions caused by rainfall, the Gono family has maintained consistent training for the race.
“The weather was quite good. It rained occasionally, and that gave us enough time to train and prepare for the race,” Archford said.
Malcom is eager to compete in two races within 24 hours, citing his ability to handle back-to-back 5km events.
“I wish I could finish the Liquor Hub race in the morning so that I can travel to Masvingo for the Christmas Fun Run Marathon,” the younger Gono said.
Asked about fatigue and possible travel sickness after a long journey of approximately 230km, Gono said adequate rest during travel and overnight sleep would ensure proper recovery.
“I am used to 10km races. Running 5km is like a warm-up to me. I can manage all the races, provided the Liquor Hub race takes place in the morning,” he said.
Malcom has been breaking records as one of Zimbabwe’s youngest athletes to complete long-distance races in remarkable times, considering his age.
Recently, he completed the Honde Valley 5km race in 17:33, a record time for an athlete under the age of 14.
