Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. EUREKA Gold Mine has strengthened its commitment to sustainable community development, investing more than US$2 million in corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in 2025.
This brings its total CSR expenditure in communities in Guruve district to about US$5 million since operations began.
The CSR projects focus on housing, clean water, sanitation, education, health services and community infrastructure, directly benefiting hundreds of residents.
They form part of Eureka’s strategy to secure community acceptance, align with government development priorities and ensure long-term sustainable operations that extend to 2039.
Speaking to journalists during a site briefing recently, Eureka Gold general manager Nelson Banda said community acceptance was key to long-term success.
“Besides the normal regulatory licences, there is the aspect of the social licence, acceptance of our operations in the community we operate in.
“This year alone, we spent north of US$2,3 million on CSR projects, which shows how key this is for us. These initiatives are not just Eureka-driven.
“We work with community committees and government officials who meet quarterly to identify priorities, which we then sponsor,” he said.
Human capital support services head Tinago Tinago said the mine’s CSR strategy was anchored on community development, environmental stewardship, health and sanitation, and education, guided by the “Triple P” principle.
“We are very cognisant of the fact that we are part and parcel of the Guruve community and as a result we need to leave some landmarks that show Eureka Gold Mine operated within Guruve and Mashonaland Central province,” he said.
“Looking after the people and the planet, not only making profits as a business, is central to how we operate.”
As part of its expansion, communities from Mazhambe and Muroiwa were relocated to Mbome Farm, where families received modern rural homesteads, water infrastructure, and social services.
“We are proud that when we relocated these people, we built modern rural homesteads, a dip tank and a primary school,” Tinago said, adding that a clinic would be completed in January next year.
Guruve district development coordinator Innocent Tawanda Mutsvenguri commended Eureka Gold Mine for maintaining strong communication and consultation with government and communities over several years.
“Eureka Mine is one of our key partners in Guruve. We have worked together for three to five years and have built a cordial relationship.
“There may be challenges, but the strength has been in communication and consultation, and they have consistently responded, especially on issues related to expansion and communities affected by it,” he said.
Mutsvenguri said the relocation was carried out with government approval, including the involvement of the Lands minister and form part of a collaborative approach between the private sector and the State.
“Government identified land for relocation and Eureka chipped in by building standard four-bedroom houses with kitchens and proper sanitation on 70-by-70 stands,” he said.
“The affected families have also been allocated land for farming and because they are moving from communal areas to resettlement areas, they will receive land permits, which open the way for eventual title deeds under the new national initiative.”
