Wicknell Chivayo has donated a bus to Highlanders Football Club after the club agreed to appoint former Warriors captain and ex-Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari as head coach.
In a statement posted on his social media pages on Sunday, 25 January, Chivayo said he was delighted that Highlanders had finally appointed Mwaruwari ahead of the 2026 Premier Soccer League season.
He said Mwaruwari’s experience, reputation, and exposure to football in South Africa, as well as his rare achievement as one of the few Zimbabwean players to compete in European leagues, made him the best choice for the job.
Chivayo announced that he would immediately donate US$300,000 to Highlanders to help cover the new coach’s signing-on fee and annual salary, clear outstanding player salaries, and fund the signing of new players to strengthen the squad.
He added that Mwaruwari would also be allowed to choose a car of his preference within the value agreed in his contract, which Chivayo said he would purchase this coming week. Added Chivayo:
“Furthermore, I am pleased to share a small SURPRISE to the team, I have purchased and made arrangements for the immediate delivery of a Brand New 75-SEATER HIGER EXECUTIVE BUS worth 285 thousand USD, fitted with luxurious amenities including a toilet, reclining seats and EXECUTIVE onboard facilities, suitable for the team’s travel, especially when playing away from BARBOURFIELDS STADIUM.
“It is my sincere hope that, with this small token, the MORALE of management, the technical team, and, most IMPORTANTLY, the players will be significantly boosted.”
Chivayo said he expects the resources he has provided to be used prudently and in the best interests of the club, enabling Highlanders to mount a serious challenge for the 2026 Premier Soccer League title.
He also stressed that he has no intention whatsoever of controlling or taking over Highlanders Football Club. Added Chivayo:
“My interest goes ONLY as far as supporting the club in fulfilment of the wishes of VP John Landa Nkomo, and in furtherance of a PATRIOTIC COMMITMENT to Zimbabwean sport.
“I believe in supporting and empowering our youth through sport and other productive sectors, and WHERE POSSIBLE, I make personal sacrifices to contribute to that cause.
“My role remains purely that of a supporter, driven by love for BOSSO and belief in Zimbabwe’s future.”
