Two serving Mozambican police officers appeared before the Mutare Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, charged with unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs after they were allegedly found in possession of methamphetamine.

The accused, Felizardo Fernando Ernesto (48) and Aviso Julio Aviso (43), were denied bail and remanded in custody pending the finalisation of the case.

They appeared before Magistrate Honest Musiyiwa, facing charges under Section 156 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, read together with the Dangerous Drugs Act (Amendment) Regulations, 2024.

Both pleaded not guilty and are represented by Nyasha Mukonyora of Gonese and Ndlovu Legal Practitioners.

Prosecutor Sandra Mlambo told the court that the two are serving police officers in Mozambique, stationed at Manica District Headquarters.

She alleged that on 29 November 2025, CID Mutare officers acted on a tip-off that one of the accused had methamphetamine allegedly imported from Mozambique for resale in Zimbabwe.

Detectives went to Meikles Park car park in Mutare’s CBD, where one of the accused was found seated in the front passenger seat of a parked vehicle. Said Mlambo:

“The detectives identified themselves and conducted a search, which led to the recovery of four transparent sachets containing methamphetamine from the accused’s right trouser pocket.

“He reportedly failed to produce any documentation authorising him to possess the drug in Zimbabwe and was subsequently arrested.”

The recovered substance was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory, where tests confirmed it was methamphetamine. It weighed 41.8 grammes and had an estimated street value of US$418.

The accused were denied bail and remanded in custody. The case is set for judgment on 30 January.
