A 26-year-old woman and a three-year-old child drowned on Tugwi-Mukosi Dam in Masvingo Province on Wednesday after their boat capsized. Police are now investigating the incident.

According to Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Ngwarai Nyathi, the victims, Leona Zendekanyi (26) and Saint Munyaradzi (3), were among eight other passengers on the boat.

The vessel reportedly hit a hard object in the water, causing it to capsize. Said Comm Nyathi:

“Police in Ngundu are investigating a drowning incident in which Leona Zendekanyi (26) and Saint Munyaradzi (3) drowned in Tugwi-Mukosi Dam on 28th January 2026.

“The incident occurred after a boat carrying the victims and eight other passengers capsized when it allegedly smashed into a hard object in the water.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges parents and guardians to take full responsibility for the safety of their children, particularly primary and ECD learners, by accompanying them to and from school or enlisting the services of reputable and trusted public transport operators.

“Children should not be left to travel alone, especially in isolated areas. Additionally, the public is warned against unsafe water activities.

“Members of the public are urged to avoid overloading boats, ensure the use of proper safety equipment and exercise caution when operating or boarding water vessels.”
