Bitumen World Rushes To Fix Harare Road Damaged By Excavator

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Bitumen World, one of Zimbabwe’s largest road construction firms, has moved to contain a public backlash after one of its excavators was filmed damaging a tarred road in Marimba, Harare.

The machine, which was reportedly working under contract for the City of Harare, was seen on Thursday driving directly over a tarred surface, leaving visible damage behind.

Footage of the incident quickly circulated on social media, triggering widespread anger and accusations of negligence against the company.

In a statement issued on Sunday, 8 February, Bitumen World said it had taken note of the video and would carry out an assessment of the affected section of road before undertaking repairs to rectify the damage caused by the excavator. The statement reads:

“Bitumen World is aware of the social media post showing one of our excavators being tracked on a public road.

“We sincerely apologise to members of the public for this incident and any concern or inconvenience it may have caused.

“We will be accessing the road and if any damage has been caused by our machine we will have it repaired.

“Bitumen World has procedures and safety controls in place to ensure incidents like this do not occur.

“This matter is being taken seriously and will be dealt with internally to ensure appropriate action is taken and to prevent a recurrence.”
