A 29-year-old man from Guyu has been sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment by the Gwanda Magistrates’ Court following his conviction for attempted rape.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed the conviction and sentence. The NPA revealed that on 19 February 2026, the offender—who resided with the victim, his stepmother—approached her bedroom and broke down the door.
He proceeded to strangle her until she fell to the ground, before dragging her behind the house and removing her underwear. He attempted to rape her, but fled the scene after she began to scream.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to the offender’s arrest.
The NPA said sexual abuse is a grave offence that often leaves lasting emotional and psychological scars on victims.
The authority further expressed concern regarding the prevalence of such crimes perpetrated by close family members.
