A 50-year-old man from the Gokwe North District in Midlands Province has been convicted and sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment by the Gokwe Regional Magistrates’ Court on two counts of raping an 11-year-old Grade 5 pupil.
The court heard that on an unspecified date in 2024, in the Chief Chireya area of Gokwe North, the victim was tending to goats when the offender approached her.
He gave her snacks and biscuits before ordering her to lie down and raping her. The offender then threatened the girl, warning her not to disclose the abuse.
The sexual assaults continued on several occasions until 18 February 2026, when the victim’s brother caught the man raping her in the grazing lands.
For the purpose of sentencing, the two recorded counts were treated as one.
Angeline Munyeriwa, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), described the sexual abuse of minors as distasteful and a dereliction of society’s duty to protect them.
She added that sexual predators and paedophiles do not deserve to live within the community.
