Musa Nyasha Dube Manyika, a business development manager at Old Mutual, has been convicted of raping a University of Zimbabwe student who was interning at the financial services firm.

Manyika was found guilty on both counts after a full trial before Harare Regional Magistrate Estere Chivasa and was scheduled to appear in court the following day for his pre-sentence hearing.

The complainant, a University of Zimbabwe student, was on an Old Mutual Scholarship at the time of the offences.

Prosecutor Chido Gohori told the court that in November 2022, Manyika sent a WhatsApp message asking the complainant to help him pack some banners at Old Mutual Gardens. He then picked her up from campus and took her to his office, where he raped her.

After the incident, he allegedly apologised and gave her a branded T-shirt, a juice bottle, and a cap, warning her not to disclose the matter or risk losing her scholarship.

On 19 June 2024, Manyika contacted the student after work under the pretext of discussing her career. She met him at Ashbrittle Shops, and he offered to drive her home.

Instead of stopping at her gate, he drove into Belfast Road, turned immediately, and stopped. He then raped her again in the car before driving her home and asking for forgiveness.

Magistrate Chivasa found that the State had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt, resulting in Manyika’s conviction.
