Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. A FINEALT bioeconomy plant in Mutoko is emerging as a flagship initiative for community-based production and innovation in rural areas.

The facility integrates a Jatropha biodiesel unit with a sunflower processing line, producing fuel, cooking oil and soap, while sourcing raw materials directly from local farmers.

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development permanent secretary Obert Jiri said the project strengthened linkages between agriculture, industry and innovation, creating employment opportunities and boosting rural incomes.

“This model is a clear expression of rural industrialisation driven by a whole-of-government approach, linking innovation, infrastructure and agriculture to sustain production and accelerate inclusive economic growth,” Jiri said during a recent site tour.

“This is the kind of development we must replicate, where rural communities move beyond raw production into value addition and industrial participation.”

Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development permanent secretary Fanuel Tagwira highlighted the role of innovation in sustaining such

projects.

“This plant demonstrates how science, technology and innovation can be applied to transform communities and create sustainable livelihoods,” he said.

“By strengthening the link between academia and industry, we are ensuring that communities benefit from modern technologies and skills development.”

Local stakeholders said the facility was beginning to transform livelihoods in Mutoko.

“This project has changed how we view farming because we now have a ready market and better returns for our produce,” Joseph Nyatanga, a local farmer said.

“Young people can now see opportunities here at home instead of migrating to towns.”

Another local farmer added: “This initiative is giving us employment and practical skills in processing and production.

“It is transforming Mutoko to a hub of opportunity where people can build their futures locally.”
