Mnangagwa Commissions 10MW Solar Plant In Kwekwe

President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially commissioned the New Glovers 10MW Solar Power Plant in Munyati, Kwekwe, on Friday, 22 May.

The Public Service Commission’s pension fund provided 51 per cent of the funding for the project.

While Phase One of the plant currently has a generation capacity of 10 megawatts, the facility is expected to exceed 110 megawatts once it reaches full capacity.

The newly built infrastructure includes over 18,000 solar panels, more than 30 inverters, two smart transformers and a six-kilometre transmission line to support the grid connection.

President Mnangagwa praised the solar project, describing it as a strategic step towards building a modern, energy-efficient, and industrialised Zimbabwe.

“It is my honour to join you today for the official commissioning of the New Glovers 10 MW Solar Power Plant, here in Kwekwe. The project is part of ongoing efforts to diversify the national energy mix and build resilience against climate change and associated energy challenges,” he said.

“The New Glovers Solar is an indigenous independent power producer that has built the 10 MW plant and this demonstrates the role played by the private sector in complementing Government efforts to modernise and grow our economy.”

Mnangagwa applauded the pension funds and financial institutions that backed the project. He urged local capital markets to mobilise further resources towards strategic national development initiatives, which align with the country’s Vision 2030 targets.

In his address, the President called upon Zimbabweans both at home and in the diaspora to invest in local development projects.

To sustain this momentum, he directed both urban and rural local authorities to reserve land specifically for energy and technology parks.
