The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed that two directors of Teku Teku Company were arrested for producing illicit alcohol under unhygienic conditions, in violation of health regulations.

According to a ZRP statement, police seized equipment linked to the illegal operation during the arrests.

“Police in Mutare arrested two directors of Teku Teku Company for manufacturing illicit brew under unhygienic conditions and in violation of health regulations,” police said.

“Equipment used in the illegal operation was recovered. The ZRP urges companies to comply with all legal and health requirements and warns that decisive action will be taken without fear or favour against individuals and companies engaged in peddling dangerous drugs or involved in the manufacturing of illicit substances.”

In an unrelated development, a truck driver, Thapson Ndou, 64, was arrested for smuggling nearly two tonnes of dagga, worth US$210,800, into the country through Beitbridge Border Post. The haulage truck, registration number AGK 0535, has since been seized by police as investigations to identify Ndou’s accomplices continue.

On Thursday, police in Beatrice arrested Clayton Chapwanya, 36, for unlawful possession of unregistered medicines. Officers recovered 250 bottles of BronCleer cough syrup from the suspect, who had just received the contraband at the Beatrice truck stop.
