President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been given the Ugandan highest honor bestowed on any foreign leader, the Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa, in Sironko, Uganda, where he was the guest of honour at the country’s 57th independence anniversary.
President Mnangagwa was invited as a special guest for the independence anniversary which was held under the theme “Consolidation of National Unity, Security, Freedom and Prosperity” by his Ugandan counterpart President Yoweri Museveni.
Presenting the honour to President Mnangagwa, Ugandan Army General, Irvin Koreta, said they are happy to be associated with President Mnangagwa.
Uganda gained independence from Britain in October 1962.
President Mnangagwa voiced his admiration for the “unity, progress and focus” of Uganda, which he said Zimbabwe was aspiring to follow and achieve. He said Uganda inspired generations of African fighters leading to the independence of the entire Southern African region.
A minute of silence was observed at the celebrations in honour of Zimbabwe’s late Founding Father, Robert Mugabe, who died on the 6th of last month.
Zimbabwe and Uganda share cordial relations, with Dr Museveni having officially opened this year’s Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, in Bulawayo.
