Jailed former ZINARA finance director Simon Taranhike who was jailed for corruption in November 2019 has been freed on bail, The Herald reports.

Taranhike was jailed for 15 months for abusing the ZINARA fuel facility and authorising the issuance of 1800 litres of fuel to a ZBC journalist.

According to the publication:

  • Taranhike through his lawyer Mrs Rekayi Maphosa had appealed against conviction and sentence arguing that he was improperly convicted.

In the appeal Mrs Maphosa argued that the State failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt as required by the law.

She said the essential elements of criminal abuse of duty were not satisfied by the State.

Taranhike’s appeal will be heard before the high court later.
