IN a bid to empower youths in Harare’s Kuwadzana suburb, Kuwadzana Development Association has embarked on a number of community programmes, among them brick moulding which has managed to transform the lives of many people.
In Kuwadzana Extension, a number of youths are taking advantage of the rapid rise in housing development that has necessitated a demand in bricks.
Though their project is being constrained by limited resources, it has managed to transform their lives.
“We are happy that the association managed to assist us in starting this project and we hope if things go well we are going to grow bigger,” said one of the youths benefiting from the project.
“We, however, call upon the responsible authorities to allocate us more land as we have limited land at the moment,” said another.
Patron of Kuwadzana Development Association, Betty Kaseke says a number of projects are in the pipeline, chief among them community bakeries for women.
“The youths of today are the future so we need to capacitate them so that they actively participate in national development. We are not only focusing on youths but we are involving women too and the community bakeries project will soon kick off here in Kuwadzana,” said Kaseke.
Youth empowerment represents a central principle of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children which all countries have signed into law.
The government of Zimbabwe recognises the importance of active involvement of young people in national development and a number of programmes designed to support the youths are being implemented.
