GOVERNMENT has pledged to ensure every citizen has access to information, especially during this Covid-19 period.
Delivering her key note address at an occasion to mark this year’s International Day for Universal Access to Information, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa underscored the importance of the right to information in the formulation of sustainable policies.
“In the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 commemorations focus on the right to information in times of crisis and on the advantages of having policy guarantees for people to access information to save lives,” she said.
Senator Mutsvangwa also gave an update on the licensing of community radio stations which are part of the process to ensure access to information.
“The revival of the community radio stations is also part of governments efforts to secure universal access to information for all citizens,” she said.
Parliamentary Portfolio Committe on Media, Information and Broadcasting Services member Honourable Regai Tsunga commended government’s commitment to media reforms.
“We are seeing what is being done so we are hopeful of positive things that might accrue,” he said Members from the local media, government officials, parliamentarians and the academia, among others, attended the event.
