THE City of Gweru’s water crisis has reached an alarming point, amid indications that the water levels at the supplying dams have significantly gone down with low lifting pumps constantly breaking down.
The situation has seen Gweru residents bearing the brunt of water rationing, amid indications that some western suburbs have gone for months without the precious liquid.
“I can’t remember the last time we managed to get water from our taps. Things have really gone bad. We are only appealing to authorities for a way out, moreover schools have since opened. Our children hardly bath due to lack of water. This is a serious disaster which needs to be closely looked at,” lamented one resident.
Gweru Mayor, Councillor Josiah Makombe who presented The State Of The City report to stakeholders this Monday urged the Gweru community to use water sparingly in the face of a crisis.
“Acute water shortages have resulted in the water levels dropping with Gwenoro recording 13 per cent, white waters recording 17% and Amapongokwe recording 33%. The recently acquired low lift pumps are down and both Gwenoro and Amapongokwe dam levels have gone down,”
I’m sure you are all aware that we got assisted by government to acquire four lift pumps at Amapongokwe. The contractor from South Africa supplied and fitted the pumps. Unfortunately for the past three months have not been working we got in contact with the supplier and three of them are now working at 60%. The contractor promised to supply some new ones,”he explained.
On allegations of rampant corruption by councillors and executives, Councillor Makombe said his office has since engaged some law enforcement agents with investigations now underway.
Gweru City Council has been in the media for the wrong reasons, with the city’s Town Clerk, Mrs Elizabeth Gwatipedza on suspension over allegations of corruption.
