Wanderer Mine re-opens

Midlands Provincial Affairs minister Larry Mavima has said government has given a nod for Wanderer Mine in Shurugwi to re-open after the State ordered its closure early this year.

Government ordered the gold mine to cease operations, as a safety measure after part of the mineshaft collapsed last December, trapping several illegal gold miners.

All miners, including artisanal miners who were illegally extracting gold were evacuated from the area.

“We are happy that artisanal miners complied with the government directive and rectified areas that needed to be attended to,” Mavima said.

“We are convinced as government that all security and safety measures at the mine have been addressed after going through a report by the provincial chief mining engineer.
There is, therefore, no need to continue the shutdown of Wanderer Mine.”

Wanderer Mine, which is part of Falcon Gold Mining company, has some of the richest gold reserves in the country.
