FBC, First Capital shine at 2025 Banks & Banking awards

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. FBC Bank and First Capital Bank (FCB) emerged top performers at the 2025 Zimbabwe Independent Banks & Banking Survey held in Harare today, standing out in profitability, efficiency, and innovation.

FBC Bank was named Top Performing Local Bank, while FCB clinched the title of Top Performing International Bank.

The annual survey — hosted by The Zimbabwe Independent in partnership with the People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB) and National Building Society (NBS) — recognised excellence across categories including Digital Banking Transformation, Financial Inclusion, ESG Leadership, and Outstanding Leadership.

Alpha Media Holdings chief executive Kenias Mafukidze said the survey provides “an active assessment of the sector’s health and dynamics,” celebrating innovation and progress in Zimbabwe’s financial system.

“The future belongs to those who embrace innovation,” Mafukidze said. “Banking is no longer confined within four walls. Those who recognise and adapt to this new reality will own the future.”

POSB chief executive Garainashe Chingunda, whose institution sponsored the 2025 edition, said the initiative underscores collaboration and resilience in the sector.

“Capital represents stability and growth, confidence connects us with customers, and credit market dynamics remind us of the need for agility and innovation,” he said.

“And credit market dynamics remind us that we operate in an ever-evolving environment that requires agility, innovation, and collaboration.

Chingunda praised banks for maintaining support to businesses and households despite economic headwinds, adding that the awards honour institutions advancing financial inclusion and driving national development.

“In recent years, our financial sector has shown remarkable resilience. Despite economic headwinds, we have collectively continued to support businesses, households, and communities — reaffirming that Zimbabwe’s banking sector remains a pillar of national development,” he said.

“At POSB, we are especially proud of our role in promoting financial inclusion and ensuring that every Zimbabwean — from the urban entrepreneur to the rural smallholder farmer — has access to safe, affordable, and reliable banking services.”

NBS financial director Mukai Mahachi, another of the sponsors, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to building a financially inclusive nation.

“As NBS, we reaffirm our commitment not just to banking, but to building a financially inclusive nation,” Mahachi said.

“We are expanding our digital footprint to onboard individuals who traditionally remain outside the formal financial system. By providing access to secure savings and credit, we convert dormant capital into productive resources.”

Mahachi emphasised the importance of affordable housing as a pillar of national development.

“Housing is more than just a commodity — it is a fundamental human right and the foundation of economic stability. We are partnering with developers, pension funds, and local authorities to deliver affordable, scalable housing projects,” she said.
