Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Cuba will donate historic armoured vehicles and a pistol once owned by former Cuban president and revolutionary leader Fidel Castro to the African Liberation Museum currently under construction in Harare.<\/p>\n

Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u2019s special envoy, will travel to Havana to receive the donation from Cuban President Miguel Di\u0301az-Canel.<\/p>\n

The items to be donated include armoured vehicles used during the iconic Battle of Cuito Cuanavale (1987-1988), where Cuban forces played a key role in the context of the Angolan Civil War.<\/p>\n

A pistol belonging to Fidel Castro, along with other artefacts related to Cuba\u2019s contributions to Africa\u2019s liberation movements, will be part of the donation.<\/p>\n

In an interview with EFE, Mumbengegwi said Cuba played a vital role in Africa\u2019s liberation and post-colonial development.<\/p>\n

He described the donation as a historic milestone in the enduring relationship between Cuba and Africa, and noted Cuba\u2019s continued support to the continent, particularly Zimbabwe, in areas such as health, education, and international diplomacy.<\/p>\n

In July 2022, Mnangagwa sent a delegation to Cuba to discuss cooperation on the African Liberation Museum project, which is part of a larger complex known as Liberation City in Harare.<\/p>\n

Cuba\u2019s long-standing friendship with Zimbabwe dates back to the 1970s during Zimbabwe\u2019s liberation struggle when ZANU fighters received military training in Cuba.<\/p>\n

In the 1980s, Zimbabwean students were sent to Cuba to train as teachers in scientific subjects, and in recent years, Cuban doctors have been deployed to work in Zimbabwe\u2019s hospitals.<\/p>\n

The late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, who was ousted in a military coup in 2017, had a close relationship with Fidel Castro, sharing a communist ideology.<\/p>\n

In 2023, the Zimbabwean government honoured Castro by naming a street in Harare after him.<\/p>\n
