Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is the Chancellor of all state universities, has approved a new salary structure for university lecturers and staff.<\/p>\n

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Professor Fanuel Tagwira, Permanent Secretary for Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, during his oral submissions to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Higher and Tertiary Education as part of the 2026 National Budget consultations at Parliament Building.<\/p>\n

Tagwira said that while the President has approved the new salary structure, the Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Mthuli Ncube, has not yet released the funds. He said:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we have done is factor in the salaries that His Excellency (President Mnangagwa) approved in our proposed budget.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe approval of salaries for university staff is a critical development. It aligns with our commitment to improving the quality of education and supporting our educators.\u201d<\/p>\n

The salary adjustments are aimed at addressing long-standing concerns over lecturers\u2019 pay, which has been a key issue for many years.<\/p>\n

University of Zimbabwe (UZ) lecturers have been on strike since April 2025, citing the severe erosion of their salaries due to inflation and currency devaluation. They are calling for a return to pre-2018 salary levels.<\/p>\n

Reports indicate that junior lecturers\u2019 monthly pay had dropped to as low as US$230, down from around US$2,250 before the economic collapse and currency changes.<\/p>\n

The lecturers, represented by the Association of University Teachers (AUT), are demanding a minimum monthly salary of between US$2,250 and US$2,500 for junior staff.<\/p>\n
