I was the only girl in those classes,\u201d Nyamwanza-Makonese said.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that the support, coupled with her family\u2019s encouragement, motivated her to apply for a medical degree.<\/p>\n<p>Her perseverance led to a historic achievement in 1970 when she became the first African woman to graduate from the University of Rhodesia&#8217;s School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the 1960s, there were many systemic barriers holding back young minds and desperate communities.
