{"id":1177,"date":"2019-01-06T16:35:42","date_gmt":"2019-01-06T16:35:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=1177"},"modified":"2019-01-06T16:35:42","modified_gmt":"2019-01-06T16:35:42","slug":"poor-funding-stymies-digital-tv-switch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/poor-funding-stymies-digital-tv-switch","title":{"rendered":"Poor funding stymies digital TV switch"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Meagre budget allocations are delaying Zimbabwe\u2019s switch to digital television from the traditional analogue signals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Settlement Chikwinya, the acting chairperson of the Parliamentary portfolio committee on Information, Publicity and Media Services said there was a shortfall of about $62 million in the ministry\u2019s bid of $100 million for the completion of the digitalisation programme.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The ministry was allocated about $38 million in the current national budget, which translates to 38 percent of the bid, which is not sufficient to complete the programme.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe implementation of this programme is behind schedule and should be completed by December 31, 2019 as this is a priority goal for the ministry,\u201d Chikwinya said, while indicating that the initiative is only 36,4 percent complete.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As such, the migration from analogue to digital broadcasting has failed to meet the June 17, 2015 International Telecommunications Union digitalisation deadline.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The switch to digital television will free up public airwaves for other uses, such as for police and fire departments.
