Bafana Bafana legend Phil Masinga has died.<\/p>\n
Buddha Mathathe\u201a the president of the South African Masters and Legend Football Association\u201a told TimesLIVE that Masinga passed away at a Parktown hospital on Sunday morning after a long illness.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is gone. Our legend is gone\u2026\u2026.It is not right\u201a\u201d said an emotional Mathathe on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is such tragic loss for the family and for the entire country.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is no ordinary legend\u201a he was an international legend.\u201d<\/p>\n
Masinga was admitted into Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp last month and then later moved to Parktown.<\/p>\n
The lanky 49-year old earned more than 50 caps for Bafana and it was his scintillating goal from 30 yards against Congo that got SA to a maiden appearance at the World Cup in 1998.<\/p>\n
Masinga\u201a played in England\u201a Switzerland\u201a Italy\u201a Mamelodi Sundowns\u201a Leeds United\u201a Jomo Cosmos\u201a among many others\u201a was also part of the Bafana squad that won the African Nations Cup in 1996.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
