It will be her only food for the day, but she will have it hours later, when she returns to her electricity-lacking home after a day spent farming or hawking goods on the streets of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe&#8217;s\u00a0second-largest\u00a0city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Gumbo, a 52-year-old widow lacking a steady job, is just one of many Zimbabweans struggling to cope with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/11\/zimbabwe-drought-hundreds-animals-die-national-park-191112161436640.html\">scorching drought<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/ajimpact\/years-coup-zimbabweans-long-economic-change-191114143045516.html\">economic instability<\/a>\u00a0that have pushed millions\u00a0to the brink of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/famine.html\">famine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;I eat what I can get,&#8221; Gumbo said.<\/p>\n<h4>More:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/12\/zimbabweans-face-hunger-starvation-191204115701438.html?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=article_page&amp;utm_campaign=read_more_links\">Nearly half of Zimbabweans face hunger, starvation<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/12\/cyclone-idai-thousands-struggling-cope-191201110911512.html?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=article_page&amp;utm_campaign=read_more_links\">Cyclone Idai: Thousands still struggling to cope<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/11\/zimbabwe-food-crisis-food-security-national-security-191128194417897.html?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=article_page&amp;utm_campaign=read_more_links\">Zimbabwe&#8217;s food crisis: &#8216;Food security is national security&#8217;<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/Zimbabwe.html\">Zimbabwe<\/a>\u00a0is in the grip of its worst economic crisis in 10 years, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/inflation.html\">inflation<\/a>\u00a0soaring to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/News\/Articles\/2019\/09\/26\/pr19355-zimbabwe-imf-staff-concludes-visit-art-consult-discuss-1st-rev-staff-mon-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">300 percent<\/a>\u00a0and the population suffering fuel shortages, power rationing and currency woes.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/emmerson-mnangagwa.html\">Emmerson Mnangagwa<\/a>, who succeeded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/robert-mugabe.html\">Robert Mugabe<\/a>\u00a0after a military intervention forced the longtime president to resign, has struggled to revive the economy while the long-standing financial troubles have been worsened by extreme weather shocks.<\/p>\n<p>And now Zimbabwe is facing major food insecurity\u00a0as many people do not have enough food to eat or they cannot afford it. According to Hilal Elver, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/un.html\">United Nations<\/a>&#8216; special rapporteur on the right to food, the country is on the verge of &#8220;man-made starvation&#8221;, with close to 60 percent of its 14-million population being food insecure.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-embeded-block-image article-embedded-card fullwidth\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-mediaCaption\" data-image-url=\"\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/12\/6\/6885beb772d74e97bb455704573831d6_18.jpg\">\n<p>After an 11-day visit last month to areas hit by the El Nino-induced drought, Elver said the crisis affected a &#8220;staggering&#8221; 5.5 million people in rural areas and a further 2.2 million in cities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are shocking figures,&#8221; she said, adding that notwithstanding the devastating effect of recurrent droughts and powerful cyclones, the crisis was partly due to chronic economic mismanagement, high unemployment, widespread poverty and rampant corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Sanctions and failed policies<br \/>\nIn her statement, Elver also suggested economic sanctions by the United States and the European Union against officials and entities linked with the ruling ZANU-PF party over alleged abuses are contributing to Zimbabwe&#8217;s current malaise.<\/p>\n<p>The government in Harare also says sanctions are impeding economic growth and &#8220;hurting ordinary Zimbabweans&#8221; &#8211; but the US embassy refutes the claim.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The government of Zimbabwe&#8217;s failed economic policies, not sanctions, hinder Zimbabwe&#8217;s economic growth,&#8221; the embassy&#8217;s press office said in a statement to Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bulawayo, Zimbabwe &#8211;\u00a0Every morning, just before the daily\u00a0power cut kicks in, Juliet Gumbo enters her kitchen to start preparing her meal.
