The ruling\u00a0Zimbabwe African National Union \u2013 Patriotic Front<\/b>\u00a0(ZANU PF) was formed on 8 Aug 1963 as a splinter party from the\u00a0Zimbabwe African People\u2019s Union<\/a>\u00a0(ZAPU) which was led by the late\u00a0Joshua Nkomo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was formed in\u00a0Enos Nkala<\/a>\u2018s house in\u00a0Highfield<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The party\u2019s first members include\u00a0Henry Hamadziripi<\/a>,\u00a0Herbert Chitepo<\/a>,\u00a0Ndabaningi Sithole<\/a>\u00a0(who subsequently became the party\u2019s first leader),\u00a0Edgar Tekere<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Leopold Takawira.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

\n

The party favoured confrontational politics as compared to ZAPU\u2019s politics of compromise.<\/p>\n

Zimbabwe\u2019s founding leader, Robert Mugabe became the leader of the party in 1977, three years before independence.<\/p>\n

The Patriotic Front (PF) was formed as a political and military alliance between ZAPU and ZANU during the war against white minority rule in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).<\/p>\n

The party has been in power since independence in 1980.<\/p>\n

In 1987, ZANU and ZAPU signed a Unit Accord which merged the two parties led by Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe after which the name ZANU PF was adopted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
