Zimbabwe urged the Southern African Development Community to help its neighbor Mozambique fight a devastating Islamist insurgency that\u2019s raising alarm across the region, saying it shouldn\u2019t be the only member state prepared to send troops.<\/p>\n
Zimbabwe\u2019s ruling party \u201cfeels that Mozambique should not be expected to deal with a potential regional and security threat of this gravity and magnitude alone,\u201d Patrick Chinamasa, Zanu-PF\u2019s acting spokesman, told reporters in the capital, Harare, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The 16-member regional bloc should invoke its mutual defense pact, under which any armed attack against a member state must be met with immediate collective action, he said. Mozambique\u2019s appeal to SADC for assistance has so far been unanswered, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cZimbabwe has the full capacity to intervene in Mozambique, but it must be a collective SADC-AU initiative,\u201d he said, referring to both the regional bloc and the African Union.<\/p>\n
Last month, the U.S. approached Zimbabwe to help fight the insurgents in Mozambique\u2019s gas-rich north, where companies including Total SE and Exxon Mobile Corp. are planning to invest nearly $60 billion in natural gas facilities.
