Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>By Staff Reporter<\/b> – ZAMBIA\u2019S revenue authority has moved to clarify the neighbouring country\u2019s new import and export policy which sees the Victoria Falls border post still open to non-commercial cargo, vehicles below 16 tons, hawkers, individual traders and tourists.<\/p>\n

In a statement Monday, Zambia Revenue Authority Corporate Communications Manager Topsy Sikalinda said Zambians and Zimbabweans alike were very much still able buy groceries from either country without any hassles.<\/p>\n

The new policy stance occasioned by SI No. 115 of 2020 however states that \u201cimportation and exportation of commercial cargo through the Victoria falls border will only be allowed on rail transport\u201d.<\/p>\n

Said Sikalinda in his statement, \u201cAll commercial cargo intended for import and export using road will have to use alternative entry or exit points such as Kazungula or Chirundu.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease note that non-commercial cargo or vehicles below 16 tons will still be allowed to use the border post. The border remains available for use to all hawkers, individual traders and tourists.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis measure is meant to preserve the Victoria Falls Bridge and also bring sanity to Livingstone Town which is Zambia\u2019s main tourist capital.<\/p>\n

RESTRICTION OF COMMERCIAL CARGO BY ROAD THROUGH VICTORIA FALLS BORDER<\/b><\/p>\n

In line with SI No. 115 of 2020 that came into effect on 1st January 2021, the Zambia Revenue Authority wishes to inform all importers and exporters and the general public that importation and exportation of commercial cargo through the Victoria falls border will only be allowed on rail transport.<\/b><\/p>\n

All commercial cargo intended for import and export using road will have to use alternative entry or exit points such as Kazungula or Chirundu. Please note that non-commercial cargo or vehicles below 16 tons will still be allowed to use the border post. The border remains available for use to all hawkers, individual traders and tourists.<\/b><\/p>\n

This measure is meant to preserve the Victoria Falls Bridge and also bring sanity to Livingstone Town which is Zambia\u2019s main tourist capital. The measure is also meant to reduce human animal conflict around the border area were truck accidents have been recorded.<\/b><\/p>\n

Further note that the limited facilities at Victoria Falls Border Post were not designed to handle commercial cargo. Over the years, trade volumes have increased in the region hence creating challenges for border officials who are unable to conduct detailed physical inspections due to limited space and other requisite handling facilities at the border post. In addition, due to the location of the border post in the national park, there has been an increase in animal and human conflict of late.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Authority further advises the business community to familiarize themselves with the Statutory instrument No. 115 of 2020 and the Eighth Schedule of the SI.<\/b><\/p>\n
