{"id":35,"date":"2017-11-17T11:02:43","date_gmt":"2017-11-17T11:02:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=35"},"modified":"2020-02-13T12:35:48","modified_gmt":"2020-02-13T10:35:48","slug":"zimbabwe-human-rights-lawyer-nothing-going-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/zimbabwe-human-rights-lawyer-nothing-going-change","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe human rights lawyer: Nothing is going to change"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"ebdd36c4777c73ae814432a5ccabc26bafda0e0e\" class=\"article-widget article-widget-text\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"text\">\n<p>Nothing is going to change in Zimbabwe\u201a because President Robert Mugabe and the military leaders who seized power made decisions together for the last 37 years.<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice Mtetwa made the remarks on Thursday night during a question and answer session after she delivered the annual Carlos Cardoso Memorial Lecture at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits). The lecture this year formed part of the Global Investigative Journalism Conference\u201a which is currently taking place at the university.<\/p>\n<p>Carlos Cardoso was a Mozambican journalist who was assassinated in Maputo in 2000 during his investigations into corruption at the country\u2019s biggest bank and senior political figures.<\/p>\n<div id=\"5ebcb8e4-49e2-7398-6cd6-7cf346e763f1\" class=\"article-widget article-widget-text\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"text\">\n<p>Mtetwa said: \u201cThe difficulty is the people who are discussing are not people of different minds. The only reason that they are having this discussion is because they have had a disagreement. It\u2019s like a husband and a wife having a disagreement and they then decide that they\u2019ll speak to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mtetwa added that politicians have a way of \u201cputting cosmetics on things\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She lambasted the current leadership for not having held a press conference since taking control to inform the world about what is happening in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe culture of openness just isn\u2019t there [in Zimbabwe].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She believes things might be different if Africa supervises the transition. However\u201a she believes several African leaders envy Mugabe and even consider him the \u201cregional Godfather\u201d.<\/p>\n<div id=\"3169b4a7-ab03-eada-1ac3-7a92886d728b\" class=\"article-widget article-widget-text\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"text\">\n<p>\u201cDo you think President Zuma would like to be Mugabe? Can you imagine him being able to do what Mugabe does and get away with it? They are in awe of him. They would love to do what he does\u201a\u201d Mtetwa said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look at the leaders in the region as being really more like a trade union of presidents. If you scratch my back\u201a I\u2019ll scratch your back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mtetwa has campaigned for freedom of speech in Zimbabwe\u201a where media freedom is stifled. In 2005\u201a she won the International Press Freedom Award of the Committee to Protect Journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Mtetwa believes the Zimbabwean media has never been free\u201a despite gaining independence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Zimbabwe\u201a historically\u201a we have just had this culture of a media that has always been stifled\u201a even by those who claimed to have liberated us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mtetwa said investigative journalism is \u201cabsolutely crucial\u201d to democracy because it shines a light on where \u201cpoliticians feed the wolves\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She\u201a however\u201a criticised investigative journalism for focusing too much on politicians and not scrutinising the private sector with the same rigour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will help\u201a because the consequences on private players\u201a when we talk about corruption\u201a are far more than those politicians have to face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nothing is going to change in Zimbabwe\u201a because President Robert Mugabe and the military leaders who seized power made decisions together for the last 37 years.
